Geology is the science that studies the earth. The word geology comes from the Greek gia or ge (Goddess Earth) meaning the earth and logos denoting logical science, hence geology might be defined as the science concerned with the description and understanding of the earth from its creation to the present day. Geology, then, deals not only landforms but also the structure and behaviour of the earth, particularly to the crust.

     Geology largely deals with the materials making up the Earth and with the nature of the surrounding gaseous envelope (atmosphere) and the vast expanse of the liquid and frozen water (hydrosphere).It also includes the study of various physical dynamic and physico-chemical processes operating on and within the Earth, and of the agents and forces involve and evolved in such processes. The greatest emphasis in geology is on the study of the materials as they exist today and the processes which operate today to establish a record of the past events in the history of the Earth. In geology, present is the basic key to the past.

Learning outcome unit:

On completion of this unit , a student shall be able to:

a)      Knowledge about the importance of engineering geology in civil engineering

b)      Ability to understand about element of mineralogy for better understanding rock and three types of rock that make the earth’s outer solid surface

c)      Ability to understand the geological structures for the stability of civil engineering work

d)     Knowledge about the geological dating, geological time scale and the geology of Myanmar for Civil Engineers

e)      Ability to understand plate tectonics and its related earthquakes help in planning and carrying out major civil engineering works

Ability to understand how the soil materials are formed in nature, the physical and engineering properties of soil, and the physical properties of rock
